M Subbannachar

M Subbannachar was the House Master of the residential school I studied. I studied in Sainik School Bijapur starting from 1970 to 77. I joined the school when I was 10 years. Mr.Subbannachar passed away two weeks back. Memories of fun, excitement, love, affection all come together rushing thinking of Mr.Subbannachar. He was mathematics teacher at the school; he had taken the responsibility of being a House Master of Adilshahi House. House master in school is in charge of the accommodation we stay in.

Entry in Sainik School Bijapur

I joined Sainik School after studying in Kannada medium Primary School from Hirekerur. Sri. Ramachandra Jannu, who then stayed at Hirekerur had put his two sons Aravind and Raghavendra at Sainik School. Sri. Ramachandra Jannu came one day to our primary school and picked up few boys to be taking the entrance test for entry into Sainik School. He was determined to put few boys to the school that he had seen and admired. Four of us from Hirekerur got into the school after two tests and an interview.

Adilshahi House

I joined the School; my guide during the joining period was MB Ravindranath of Adilshahi House. He went on to lead the troupes in Tololing and Tiger Hills during the Kargil war and was honored Vir Chakra for his team effort. I was allotted a roll number 560 and house Adilshahi. After 30+ years from passing out of the school, the roll number and house are still our identity with all other Sainik School students, who are known as “Ajeets”. The Ajeets community is large and closely knit.

Adilshahi House became my house of residence for the next years of my stay at Sainik School Bijapur and all through my stay; Mr. Subbannachar was our house master. When I joined the school, I did not understand or know to speak English, but it was compulsory to speak English only. Publicly silent, we had to find private moments with friends to exchange notes in native language. The routine at school was rigorous right from waking up at 5.30 AM to going to sleep at 10.00PM.

Our House Master was our primary contact along with matron, whom we called “Aunty”. Waking up so early had not been our routine before we joined, so each day, Mr.Subbannachar would visit the dormitory, wake us up. He chased us to complete our morning routine in quick time to be ready for Physical Training or Parade, based on the day’s program. During these days, I had my first attempt in brushing my teeth using paste and a brush, washing my socks, polishing or whitening my shoes, wearing different dress for different occasions, properly belted, combing hair to be tidier than what we were used to. At the parade, he would say “left” “right” and teach us to be straight, chin up, elbows straight and digging our heels as we marched.

He taught all of us the art of polishing shoes, whitening our canvas shoes, polishing our belts, combing our hair and to eat like gentle cadet. He visited our tables while we ate and ensured we ate well and did not waste any food. He knew some of us would not like few items that were served; he mentioned about the strength that we can derive.

We were growing and mischief was part of us, he was there watching us and just gave us a glance to discipline us. House competitions meant that he would give his best. His talent repository to train us in parade, in drama, song, art, public speaking, everything we needed to be trained in he was there. His eyes would not miss a broken button, unzipped trouser, unbuttoned flap amongst the 100 of us. I lost my father in 72 and my mother could not visit me and I was too young to understand all that. Subbannachar was there beside me, hugged me when I cried, perhaps I cried more to keen the embrace longer. Looking back, I now think, I did not miss my father because of Mr. Subbannachar’s presence. Subbannachar sir was the tower of strength, a power house of talent, warmth when we needed him most. I wonder sometime, how someone can be packaged with all of this. Adilshahi House was lucky to have him as House Master, batch after batch; he has done the same with all his energy. His family included Mrs. Subbannachar, always smiling, helped me out when my sister came to meet me at their house. I was also lucky to be classmate of Prahlad Subbannachar younger son, the elder one being Surendranath, both serving officers in the defence. Mr. Subbannachar’s daughters Uma and Usha stayed in touch with my sister long after I left the school.

What do I pray for Mr. Subbannachar, I don’t know, I want those moments back again. His soul rest in peace and make his family proud of Mr. Subbannachar’s service in nurturing many young minds.

The Colonel's political lesson

Dilip Vengsarkar does not know to play the game, surprised, not this one, the game of elections. Cricket was his game, During his days, his bat would stamp authority, amass runs, his bat would do the talking, even the wiliest bowlers feared his work of art with the bat. He has faced many a bouncers, googlies, in the cricketing world. Elections of the association is a different game, he lost his wicket on the home turf, recently lost the elections he contested for the position of President, Mumbai Cricket Association. Dilip has played excellent innings as batsman representing India along with Sunil Gavaskar and likes. His records are definitely worth looking as great contribution to Indian Cricket. He contested for the position of President of Mumbai Cricket Association, Vilasrao Deshmukh as opponent. Deshmukh is a seasoned politician, he has won many elections and the game of election is not new to him. He is not playing cricket, need not play cricket to win a cricket board election, as it is won by voting and not by batting and he knew the game of winning elections means amassing the support of the more number of voters than his opponent.

Lesson for Ex-cricketers need to know some politics as well. Their cricketing abilities, contributions to the game , noble intentions are never under question, winning board elections is a different game, it requires the ability to muster support of the members of the board who vote can only ensure a victory. There is need for the former players to know the board members, build ongoing relationships before contesting an election. Anil Kumble contested the elections at Karnataka State Cricket Association, he formed a competent team, made his intentions well known, so the others who wanted to contest created space for him. He very well knew his chances when he made an announcement, but then Anil is a fighter, he doesn't like loosing, he ensured the support of the mighty, powerful and not so powerful. He campaigned his vision to every member of the board. No body had any doubts about his intentions and love for cricket.

Board games, Democracy, politics, new stance for the Colonel. Who are the members of the association, the majority are not players, please note.

Go on Colonel don't loose heart, there will be next match, know your opponent, take guard. You will play like you played at the Lords. ALL THE BEST.

Anil Kumble-Gentleman of the Gentleman's Game

Anil Kumble has done all things like a gentleman, when the world was talking about why he does not turn the ball enough, he just took wickets to silence great critics of the game. When his form and ability to take wickets was being questioned he stuck back with wickets. He played with unboken spirit and some times with broken jaw, with full heart before some heartless spectators and commentators. Cricketers accross the world respect him for his competitive spirit. There is no huge animated personal celebration when he takes a wicket. There is a just a smile and satisfaction of having achieved. Smiling Assasin and Jumbo were also his names. He has stood besides the WALL (Rahul Dravid) and travelled along the MYSORE EXPRESS (Javagal Srinath BABU).

This post does not record his achievements in numbers, like wickets, runs scored, captained, won, lost, averages etc. This post is to record the ups and downs of a sports person, who stood testimony to all criticism and remained rock solid with his sheer determination and sporting abilities. A GENTLEMAN.

Sports spectators want their heroes, here is Anil Kumble, who like a character actor, stole the show at times from the heroes, represented the pains and humilations of the team, his face always read the opposite of opponents score board. The determination you felt when you saw him, the generation has been lucky to see the emotions of Anil Kumble, everyone has a lot to learn from the way he moved, his expressions, all body language. All competitive, yet a perfect gentleman.

Karnataka Cricket team has been one of the strongest teams in the "Ranji Trophy" Elite Group. This team has good record in the "Ranji Trophy" tournaments. The dillemma that Anil Kumble had was how could he play for any other team other than Bangalore, Karnataka and India. Perhaps Anil belongs to a generation of professional cricketers who are still attached to the teams in wholehearted spirit. He perhaps cannot play for any other team other than Bangalore, Karnataka and India. He hung his boots in time, Gentleman.

The Karnataka team flourished with the availability of players in 1995/96 seasons, the team comprised of players like Rahul Dravid, Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble. The team has also won 4 "Irani Trophy" tournaments. Team India has 5-6 players from Karnataka Anil, Rahul, Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad, Dodda Ganesh, Somasunder, Joshi, Bharadwaj who would be among the 16 at a point in time. Anil has been there, was the piller of strength to all. A great gentlemanly approach for a fellow state person.

Anil now is the president of KSCA, the association always been blessed with good administrators, now it has a team that comprises of Anil Kumble, Srinath, both of them have played long enough for Karnataka and India to know, what needs to be done. Mind you, not too many cricketers make this choice of serving an Association, as they could get more lucrative offers for their cricketing skills, commenting, coaching and many other skills. Anil and Srinath made a choice different from other cricketers and also a bit too early for an administartive posts. The beauty of their understanding of these positions is that these are not decorative and administartive positions but places that demand action. That's the reason they have chosen to be there. Another gentlemanly act.

Anil Kumble has been part of Indian Cricket Team, he is also amoungst the most gifted, as he could articulate the contract terms for players, he along with few other senior players negotiated terms of contract for players with the Board. A gentleman in approach.

He has a great number of friends in the cricketing fraternity who have benefitted in different forms, when they are not playing. Karnataka Cricket is a like family, the people who played in the team yester years have not made as much fortune as the current breed. There is a strong bonding, support mechanism, which helps people in need. A lot of these initiatives are bourne out of the gentleman.

The gentleman has a cirle to his name at the heart of the city in Bangalore, ANIL KUMBLE CIRCLE, Anil Kumble has come a full circle.

Every year during the third week of December, while the world is busy celebrating Christmas, holidaying and welcoming the New Year, there are around 3000 Ajeets and their families coming together for an annual get together. The get together is an union of three generations of schools boys passed out of "Sainik School Bijapur". The alumni of the school known as Ajeets, a closely knit community, widely spread in India and abroad.

Sainik School Bijapur has produced excellent cadre of men for the Armed forces and also for civilian life. The school commenced on the 16th September, 1963, with an objective of preparing boys to join the National Defence Academy, Pune, there is a good history to its origins as to how Sri. SR Kanthi fought tooth and nail to get the School located at Bijapur.

The alumni has built its networks with humble beginnings of get together arranged by Dr.CS Hunshal at Dharwar, where few Ajeets met, the network today has become an institution with the collective efforts of Mr.GD Kale, D. Vijayakumar from the staff and every Ajeet has put in an active effort to connect and collect, Ramesh Bhat, Maltesh Patil, Ravindranath, Jacob George, Sanjeev Baitmangalkar from Bangalore and many other Ajeets from Hubli, Dharwar, Bijapur, Belgaum, Bagalkot, Davangere, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune and overseas. Today called as "Old Boys Association of Sainik School Bijapur" is an institution in itself supporting the cause of the alma mater and its members. Mr.GD Kale did what classmates.com, schoolmates.com, facebook.com, AT & T, BBC, AIR could have done together for the OBA of SSBJ, his zeal to connect all of the Ajeets has laid a strong foundation for the association. Mr.GD Kale knows most of the boys by their first name, roll number, place they belong to, profession of father mother, and more details than an online form can capture. may god give him all the energy to continue to do what he is doing.

The officials at the school have related excellently well to the association and have welcomed the cause of its existence and the support it can render. Over a period of time the school's infrastructure facilities are now at its best. The teaching staff,non-teaching staff, existing and retired are all part of the network and the Ajeets take pride in inviting them to join the meets and the staff has taken pride in attending, suggesting and guiding the association.

Ajeets are known by their Roll numbers, smaller (lesser) the number indicates an early joinee and increasing (larger) indicates the later entrant. The school has been residential, hence life spent in school is fresh in the minds of the Ajeets and they never tire in speaking about it anytime. The nostalgia is contagious and the memories last for life time. The memories are like old wine getting stronger as they age. Right from the sounds we heard, scenes we saw, moments we spent together, games on the field and off it.

Every meet is a one and half day event, starts with informal meeting in the evening, when most classmates meet, celebrate the togetherness and recall the wonderful days they spent in school, it is also an update on who, what, when changed from the past meeting. The day is fun and entertainment oriented, ends with a cocktail and dinner. The next day morning is the official meeting, where the progress of the association, the contributions of Ajeets and families to the nation are recalled, respects to departed souls and some discussions and resolutions mark the day. The families are engaged in good activities in the meanwhile. The local chapter of the association find their innovative ways each time in managing the function. Before the annual meeting is over, the dates, venue of the next annual meeting is declared. A Souvenir is released and there are few things to take back home as memory. Before we realize the meeting gets over. We look forward to the meeting of the coming year. Those who can not make it to the meeting, their hearts are there, I could write this piece to be there. I will miss this one.

This year the meeting is at PUNE on the 25th and 26th December, 2010.

Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta win Gold for Badminton Doubles in CWG, the news spread far and wide, we were all cheering for India and for Ashwini and Jwala. Ashwini is daughter of MA Ponnappa, this write up is to congratulate the father, family, daughter and her partner.

MA Ponnappa is a proud father of Ashiwini Ponnappa, his chest would swell with pride for the achievement of his daughter, Ashwini from current world ranking of 82 and Indian ranking of 11, to go on to win the Gold for Doubles with partner Jwala Gutta, at Commonwealth Games is a great achievement. They trained hard, especially with all that Jwala went through, the motivation probably was stronger to be known for medal rather than anything else. They pair excellently, the combination of amazing net-play and the back field cover is a treat to watch. Some shots of Ashwini was just not negotiable, the speed at which the shots came were counted as fastest shots. The final was announced, people watched glued to the television watched the pair move from strength to strength. The moment came of victory after hard toiled game, the pair made India proud.

When Ashwini was born on 18th September, 1989, Ponnappa may not have imagined that his daughter would be as good an athlete/player that he has been.

A senior at School, Lt.Col. BGV Kumar shares his view "Ponnu as some of us called him back then was a gifted sportsman. Any game came naturally to him. Ponnu and KV Basavaraj could have been a part of the Brazilian foot ball team or a part of Indian hockey team back in 1968/69! Ponnu could execute a scissor kick with perfection on the football field as a 12 year old boy!" As Somashekhar Basappanavar and Shashi Albur put it, He has been unique during those days to date, he could take up any game and excel in it; Inter-house competitions would be as fiercely fought battles and Ponnappa enjoyed every sport. May be if there was sports like Badminton, Tennis and Swimming during those times in the School, he would have gone on to become a world class player even before Ashwini, as what his friends reckon. He even now forms a part of RBI Hockey team.Above all,he is a thoroughbred,unassuming and a down to earth human being.In school team, his presence in the left wing,along with the solid right back Brahmendra and KV Basavaraj on the right wing and Shashi and Somashekhar bought laurels to the school team.

Ashwini has also been awarded Karnataka Rajyostava Award for Sports Excellence.

Search for information, call it by another name/names, Search, exploration, pursuit, hunt, quest, investigate, seek, pursue, chase, detect, track down, it boils down to just that. Search has always been the question for which our answer has been progress and development.

In ancient times there have been defined ways to get knowledge, through which you attained the goal of life”Mukti” . The path of knowledge was available through

1. Books/Vedas: Vedas or all forms of writings gave a person the knowledge that was needed to attain his goal. Books advised some practical aspects to say that “I am not enough”, which then opened the vistas of other forms in which knowledge was available to be obtained.

2. Teacher/Guru: The Guru was a human form of delivery of the knowledge along with help and guidance available all the time. The teacher would solve and resolve all the doubts in the minds of the pupil to attain knowledge. The important aspect of the Guru-Shishya relationship was to surrender and seek.

All eyes on South Africa, the music, dance, colours all residing in there, Foot Ball world Cup begins today. A wonderful country South Africa put together a great show and the show of skill of the participant countries to follow now. More than calling any country a favorite, the spirit of such event, the country participation makes one's heart swell with pride.

The moment to be there, participate and sing along the National Anthem along, when it is played is a great moment of national pride. How I wish that India is there to participate soon in the coming Foot Ball world cups, one to put the system together with a clear objective to qualify to participate with timeline. Also once qualified have the only commitment that allow the team to be sent to represent the nation and nation only.

India has lost a wonderful opportunity of playing Cricket in Asiad Games taking place in November, 2010 in China. It would be when the national anthem would be played, India had every chance to win a medal. It would also would have been a great experience to participate along with other sports and perhaps feel the national pride, just for the National pride only.

"Bhopal's Second Disaster", Deccan Herald's headline captured it all, you could not have read, heard anything better as a headline for the injustice that poured and tore the nation through poisonous gas leaked 25 years ago.

The difference between Kasab and Keshab is that, one is with the gun, the other is without, both killed. The tragedy at Bhopal is no less than a the Mumbai attack. It also represents the legal system that we have, where for mass murder, the punishment and the penalty is negligible.

Media coverage of the judgement and analysis is so poor that they seem all doctored and all of the print and broadcast media seem to have a agenda other than serving a cause. Hello TRP are you listening?

BCCI-Not sending Team for Asiad Games in China

The sixteenth Asian Games also known as the XVI Asiad is to be held in Guangzhou in China from November 12 to 27 this year. There are about forty-two events scheduled for this edition of the Asian Games including Cricket. The Board of Cricket Control of India is not sending a team to participate in the Asian Games stating reasons of international commitments. BCCI has done a lot for Cricket in India and also the organized way in which the commercials have been managed, also the way in which they have built spectacle around the sport is worth emulating for any sport.

The fact is that BCCI has benefited itself, the consumer product companies, broadcasters to a large extent, players, state boards, event management companies, a host of administrators and managers. Once in a way there is an opportunity to represent the country in true sense to win a gold medal, a national pride, such an opportunity is given away by BCCI.

Firstly does the team represent India or BCCI?
The fact is that BCCI is an independent body, not answerable to any direct constitutional authority of India, not under Sports Authority of India but wields more power and has loads of money.
BCCI is under ICC, which is headquartered now in Dubai. Why Dubai?
BCCI signs up contracts for playing or broadcasting with only profit as the sole motto. Suppose, Cricket is to be represented at Commonwealth games as happened in 1998, BCCI may or not send the team or send a second class team to represent India, now for Asian Games
The broadcasting rights of India matches rake huge sums, as the viewership for Cricket is highest in the World.
The sports culture in India is driven by Idol worship
The idol makes the money and the dependent bodies make money, if the idol has huge crowd pull.
The sports persons are pulled by Advertisers, sponsors for monetizing this idol worship.
The players, managers, coach are all under BCCI contracts, which pays them the money, obtained through broadcasting, stadia rights etc.
When Packer of Australia went on to create what we call as one-day format, the existing bodies of cricket made hue and cry of it.
The channel which gets the broadcasting rights will try to maximize revenues through key matches which pull maximum viewership (India,Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka).
The channel may find other channels buying coverage in winning countries or extension of footprint in that country, Eg., Sony may soon have maximum footprint advantage in Bangladesh.
The other sports channels, who do not get broadcasting rights of the key tournaments, start/create similar tournaments with different sponsors, ICC Trophy, Champions Trophy, 20-20, IPL, Tri-series are all examples of such tournaments.
Nearly 80% of the cable and satellite homes would have watched India, Pakistan, if these countries had entered the entered the Super-8 stage. Nearly 4 times of the highest TRP ratings for any programme on television.
The premium charged for Super-8 matches if India and Pakistan played would have been 100% by channel.
The stakes are very high for the broadcasting channels after buying the rights to maximize the advertisement airtime.
The competition who failed to obtain broadcasting rights could be “Spoil-Sport” in many cases, in winning or losing matches of key countries, where viewer ship is high.

There were couple of tragedies that took place during the past few months. Not that these tragedies were totally new, unexpected. Of these tragedies, if someone were to plot occurrence, type, people injured, deaths etc, only the place, type, number of people injured/deaths changed. Tragedies did happen.

How do we respond to tragedies, we heard, learnt, we are shocked, we react. Online, we pass it on, at times, we respond online. Our online sharing of news, images are akin to sharing jokes without the humor to our network.

Our sensuousness and responses to human tragedies have to do with awareness, capture, leading the capture, share the creation with network of friends and colleagues. There are also petitioners creating signature malas to be sent to President of America and to the President of India etc. The system grudged ones keep doing this many times, some have caught the fancy of forwarding them all the time to everyone their mailbox has access to. The chain of these email malas, are many many times longer than our queues of people waiting for their turns to vote. I wonder, if any/some of these messages/petitions really reached their addressed and desired destinations (I don't mean the email id collectors).

Have we got into "Online and Not Available for Action" (ONAA) syndrome, Have the mobiles, our screens robbed our actionable selves. Have we misunderstood that being online and spreading message is action.

In corporate, my recent interaction with my colleague and noted that in his "TTD" Things To Do list, most items were about mailing someone, few with work done status. The FFWDs, Fast Forward, button is fast becoming "Action Item".

We will keep getting news about some tragedy like pedestrian loosing his/her life by vehicle accident. The reason is the honking was unheard as the earplugs were on, or the focus was on hearing conversation on the mobile. What changes us, does it? Do we warn our co-passengers/friend to turn off his mobile while driving. Our social caution antenna has better reception than out risk aversion. Some may affect us, some pass on as news item, through newspapers, TV replays/repeat telecasts.

We live, enjoy being a social animal and saying "not my turn yet". I enjoyed a ride one day along side a friend, who had couple of drinks more than permitted by law. He happily said, "I enjoy driving after a drink and am better". Quick to add was another friend in similar state, who agreed and said from back seat, "I am never drunk, so driving is not a problem, Can I".

My career has had a few ups and downs, I started to work for a company in Pune, soon after my MBA, within a year, I had to move towards Karnataka to manage a domestic responsibility. I loved the job, the company, the people around and the challenges I faced during my first few months. the next job was with a small company in Belgaum, started manufacturing few months before I joined. I was the only sales/marketing person, visit the market each day with the hope to close a deal. I soon realised, I learnt a good deal from the customers, their kind appreciations working like a booster. There after I joined Deccan Herald, was with the newspaper group for almost a decade with different responsibilities.

After 20 years of working, I am revisiting the career breaks that I had, the first was soon after my degree, I started tuition classes for PU students teaching Mathematics at Ranibennur. Why did I choose to teach and that too mathematics is a real question. I intended to clear my backlog of maths paper of BSc and also appear for IAS prelims with Maths as my elective. Two extremes targets with single bullet. I was 22 then, Is this why the situation is called catch 22? I would not budge, I had made it clear to my family that I will take one of the three education/career choices. Pursue CA or MBA or IAS, why? because no one in my native place Hirekerur taluk had done these. This information was tracked by me from the time, I was in PUC, when a tahasildar on probation deputed to Hirekerur told me about it. I repeatedly kept asking some of the people and I learnt that BE,MBBS, BSc(Agri) are the most chased streams of study. BCom was evolving as another one, but none at CA, IAS or MBA yet. Few of the good educated people in Hirekerur at that point of time, who were generally considered good counsels advised me to pursue BEd, why, Teaching had already become my family profession, with my mother, 2 sisters and a brother as teachers. They wondered what MBA is all about, Is it BA or MA or something in between, why have anybody not done it till date, then it may not be good and you may not find a job with that degree. I stopped all and any explanation to anyone, I was adamant, arrogant, anyway, I was considered as cynical. I got some GMAT test paper book from Dharwar, when I visited there to appear for IAS prelims. Finally, I was on the moon, when my results of my MBA results were known. I joined MBA at the University of Pune. This break is one that was taken at a time, when I had a good secure income, good respect in town being a teacher and of being in my native place. Was the break required, why did I break the secure zone to pursue MBA, I was possessed to get there.

Sriram Beldona was one strong reason to be there. Sriram Beldona was my classmate in BSc days, very well disciplined, organised, far more mature for his age perhaps 20 at the time, more like an officer amongst the unorganized student community. Walking encyclopedia, Sharp wit, good humor and alas organised with every step of his journey to the classroom from gymakhana stairs, where we played chess. Sriram persued his MBA from Kausali Institute of Management Studies at Karnatak University Dharwar, later did his PhD in the USA, is currently Chair person and Associate Professor of Management at the Brynt University. Sriram has a strong sense of purpose and goal clarity from the time I have known him, which is now 30 years. I am thankful and am proud to be motivated by him amongst many others, whose life he would have changed

Online Silence

It is hard to keep silent, when you are online, yet, at times silence helps. Virtual speakers, virtual audiences, socially averse, publicity shy, people with only participative observational intent participate in the online forums, chatrooms, discussions. Some of the participants have the eagerness to express in words, while some silently observe. The topic of discussion here is about the silence of the vast majority of silent participants, who are participants and do not voice their point of view. My recent survey with people who chat regularly, have mentioned that they enjoy part of the discussion, look forward to certain parts of the conversation, which catches their interest. The rest of the conversation which does no interest them is taken as the bad part that comes with the good. Chatters often find it difficult to answer a query or a question posed online during a chat. Online silence refers to "not saying anything", it could also mean, saying something, which has no meaning, or postponement of the conversation by changing the way in which the conversation is discontinued or anything that could mean there is a response but may not be the desired.

Our response mechanism will at its best, as online means there is no confrntation face -to-face, the lack of direct confrontation also encourages the online communication. The concealed identity encourges the flow of communication. Most respondents said, they will go silent, if there is an invasion of privacy, it was evident in case of female respondents.

Respondents used creative ways to keep the conversation going, yet get away from saying some thing. Smileys, other pictorial responses were used to convey rather than saying in words. Some responded by turning of, logging out when they desired to be silent during an online conversation. Some faked ignorance, being dumb to saying something.

In a group forum, the silent majority is observant, tolerant, intelligent, knowledge savvy, as expressive as the other part, just refrains to voice out. The fact that human expectations are much to the appreciation, the vast majority tends to do the positive by appreciating, lauding efforts of another, not usually a shock statement.
The desire to cast their power over, some express as their hard truth, much which belongs to the ego rather than the truth itself. There are witty, thoughtful, wordy, judgmental, responses mostly seeking an identity.

Appreciation-Social Ability-Skill Building

Maltesh Patil, a fellow Sainik School mate, whom I never met at school, because, we both had different entry and exit years at school. The thread of being alumni of Sainik School, unites us like brothers, Once we met and have been brothers and extended we have a family, a community called Ajeets.

Maltesh Patil truely follows Spice telecom's advertisement slogan "Never Miss an Opportunity" to appreciate. Maltesh's congratulations message about my blog also mentions about some skills, which I have been fortunate to exhibit and share before an apreciative audience including Maltesh. Every skill needs apreciation, in fact, nothing better to inspire a performer like a honest appreciation from the participating audience. Any good performance is a reward for the time spent by the audience. Maltesh has been a regular one at most of my performances, be it singing, a trainig session or workshop or conducting a function. Never forgets to take an opportunity to appreciate, which is a great social ability. It is such natural social ability of people like Maltesh, Hunshyal Sir and many that has brought a community (Ajeets) of 3000+ people together and continues to keep it together. I will save the talk about Ajeets Community for another day,as it is closer to my heart and will need a bigger space/canvas.

Coming back to appreciation, building skills. I mentioned about me being son of a teacher of a Girls primary school, Gopika dance performances from the girls needed to be around a character Krishna, with a flute, standing on crossed legs. This is my first vivid memory of my stage performance. Such opportunities perhaps took away the fear associated with stage and performance.

Thanks Maltesh, you inspire me, every time you honestly appreciate. You do this to many more people, you have it in you naturally. You unite, Brother, Your this quality has done a lot good to the entire "Ajeet Community".

What an Idea Sirji, must have just been a outcome, which finally became a great idea for advertising for Idea. The growth in the subscription base for mobile service operators in telecom hasbeen at its best. The services offered to subscriber base now accross India hardly has a differntiator apart from coverage, network and price. The advertising message for the mobile telecom services with huge bugets is about increasing subscription with repeat mind recall value. Airtel's jingle/music just did it, while Reliance has tried almost similar. You can recall only Titan, having done that before

Advertising is the business of ideas which are created succeed. Advertising combines a great business logic identified with the target customer sagment and delivers a message through the right media. Keeps repeating to catch attention and finally intention to purchase and keep the loyalty to get repeat purchase. Some advertising gurus have great ideas, some small ideas once will become great Ideas.
Ideas, many people have many ideas about ideas. Some produce great ideas, In my early days in Deccan Herald, one of my bosses, always pinned me down saying "Golden Idea", and put a Sportswear statement "Just Do it". I had suggested that ouskirts of cinema theatres could be a great place to sell annual publications "Prajavani-Deepwali Visheshanka", he said, "Golden Idea" you, "Just do it", he said, after every show, for a few days. I did. A great humbling experience to be outside a theatre and to sell magazines for a MBA graduate, with golden idea.
Few instances could discourage anyone in professional life to expressan idea.

8. Agree and create a group culture, individual tantrums are immature.
9. Speak slowly, in short sentences and summarise to new audiences. It is not speed, or diction but the listeners understanding that matters. Most questions can be simply answered, don't complicate.
10. Decision taking or closing an issue is the most important quality. It takes maturity, courage to take a decision.

Birth-Few Childhood memories

I was born in Ranibennur, now in Haveri District(then in Dharwar District). I recollect being at Motebennur, as a kid(3-5 years), playing in and around a church. I can recall church, its surroundings and few people in long robes. Motebennur brings me back memories of evening Bhajan sessions every day at a close by Shiva Temple. Perhaps my Mother sent me to the Bhajan sessions so that I don't disturb her. Amongst all the people gathered for the Bhajan I was the youngest and was encouraged to sing, play any instrument around. Tabla and Khanjeer were my favourites. Just pushing the air into the harminium was also pass times to see he movement of the animal hide through the holes. The animal hide/skin was reachable, soft, the movement hrilled me with each push. The bhajan sessions got my sense of music and rhythm, which remains with me and I cherish.

Muddi's House with few children of my age was just opposite to ours and no one stopped us from running in, around and out of it. Few hiding places gave us chalk powder(Sunna) marks on our skins and clothes, some elders were always bothered to take those marks off from us. Muddis grew lots of groundnuts and paid for seperating the nuts from the plant and also nuts from the shell. I did this happily to earn/get my first fruits/nuts of labour.

My sisters and Mom tell me, that I got lost in a train at Byadagi, was found next day. My mom still narrates how much she cried when I was lost. I was able to speak, I perhaps gave description enough for finders to locate my origins.

They tell me that I was popular in Moteennur for singing Bhajans and my Mom's school functions gave me an opportunity to publicly show my talent. I think, some assistant teachers wanted to please my Mom(then Head Mistress)by asking me to sing.

I also remember Kaka and family, Kaka was a tall, slightly dark, well built man who owned a Hotel next to my house and his son Basavaraj.

My Mother working as a Head Mistress of Kannada Primary School got transfered to Hirekerur, then we moved there.

New-First-Start

Well, I have written starting in school magazines to publicly read newspapers, magazines. To make a beginning to blog was some what holding me for a while. The instant publishing was some thing that held me back, as opposed to getting to see the written word, again and again to edit. I had to begin, somewhere with something, to put all the social metrics fear away and to "JUST WRITE"
This is New-First-Start. Some where, some one, some time and further every added to all the three-has to start with either fear or confidence. The dillemma leading to NO-Start.
I will perhaps read this first one again and again, as my friend Maruti (Basu Medicals) says, "we make videos of all events in our life in our memory, some we keep for rewind and play and replay,most of these replays will have sensitivity bottons, which may change with age"
Maruti is a friend with no common field except that we became friends and have remained so. I will love to share about some of these friends in life in my coming posts.
